Are you skipping the most important step?

If you've been using your Milie serum as your last step and wondering why your skin still feels a little dry or tight - this one's for you. No judgment at all. It's actually one of the most common questions we hear, and it makes sense given how rich and nourishing our serums feel on the skin.

But here's something important you need to know - serums and moisturisers do completely different jobs. Understanding that difference is the key to getting the most out of both.

What a serum actually does

Serums are concentrated, active-ingredient formulas designed to go deep. Their molecular structure is smaller, which means they can penetrate further into the skin to deliver their payload, whether that's hyaluronic acid for hydration, vitamin C for brightening, or the plant-based actives in our Renew Facial Oil working on fine lines and tone.

The Marine Balancing Hyaluronic Acid Serum, for example, is pulling in moisture from the environment and delivering it into the skin. The Marine Vitamin C Hyaluronic Acid Serum is driving antioxidants in where they can actually do something. These formulas are built for absorption, not for sitting on top of the skin.

That's their strength, and also exactly why they can't do the moisturiser's job.

What a moisturiser actually does

A moisturiser works at the surface. Its job is to seal. It creates a protective layer that locks in everything your serum just delivered, prevents moisture from evaporating throughout the day or night, and reinforces the skin's natural barrier.

Without that seal, all those beautiful actives your serum deposited can evaporate right back out. You've done the hard work and then left the door open.

The Omega Complex Day Cream is formulated specifically to do this in the morning, protecting the skin barrier while you go about your day. At night, the Collagen Restore Night Cream takes over, supporting your skin's natural repair process while you sleep, keeping all those evening actives working where they should be.

The right order, every time

Think of it this way: your serum is the treatment, your moisturiser is what makes it stick.

After cleansing, apply your serum to freshly washed skin. Let it absorb for a minute or so. Then follow with your moisturiser to seal everything in. That's it, two steps, two products each with their own roles, and you're done.

If you're using a facial oil like the Renew Facial Oil or Hemp Balancing Face Oil, those generally go on after your moisturiser or can replace it depending on your skin type, a good rule of thumb is that oils go last.

Why it matters more than you might think

Skipping the moisturiser step doesn't just affect how your skin feels in the short term. Over time, a compromised skin barrier shows up as increased sensitivity, uneven texture, and your active ingredients becoming less effective because the skin isn't in the right condition to absorb them well.

Your skin is genuinely good at telling you what it needs — if it feels tight, dry, or reactive after your routine, that's usually the barrier asking for more support.

Not sure which moisturiser is right for you?

If you're not sure which Milie moisturiser suits your skin best, our skin quiz takes about two minutes and gives you a personalised recommendation. It's a good place to start, especially if your skin has changed with the seasons or you've recently introduced new products into your routine.

Your serum is doing a lot of good work. Give it the partner it deserves.
